Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals are sponsoring 3 fall sessions of their Helping the Whole You series, beginning with “Internet Safety” Sept. 18, 2019 in Big Rapids, and Sept. 19, 2019 in Reed City.
The FREE classes are held from noon to 1 p.m., and a FREE lunch is provided.
Topics include internet safety, “nutrition as we age” and dealing with dementia. The content of the monthly seminars is the same in both communities.
In September 2019, trooper Brian Lucha with the Michigan State Police will educate attendees about an array of internet safety topics, including:
Danger signs and the grooming process of predators;
Giving out personal information;
Consequences of posting material online; and
Websites and apps to avoid.

The October sessions, Oct. 16, 2019 in Big Rapids, and Oct. 17, 2019 in Reed City, will feature Bailey Parmelee, a registered dietitian, addressing “Nutrition as We Age.”
Parmelee will discuss the role nutrition plays in peoples’ lives as they age.
“Dealing with Dementia” will be the November session, Nov. 20, 2019 in Big Rapids, and Nov. 21, 2019 in Reed City.
Denise Tinkham, a social worker from Reed City Hospital’s rehabilitation and nursing center, will discuss types of dementia, early signs of dementia and offer tips on caring for someone with dementia.
The classes are held at Michigan Works offices in both communities: 14330 Northland Drive., Big Rapids and in Reed City at 240 E. Church St. in Michigan.
Helping the Whole You is part of Spectrum Health’s overall Healthy Communities initiative and is based on needs identified in the most recent Community Health Needs Assessment conducted by the area hospitals.
