FREE Dental Clinic offered by Good Samaritan FREE Clinic and American Dentist’s Care Foundation at Hedgesville, West Virginia
An upcoming dental clinic scheduled for August 2019 aims to raise awareness about the importance of dental care while offering the community FREE cleanings and more.
The two-day event, hosted by the Good Samaritan FREE Clinic and the American Dentist’s Care Foundation, will offer those 18 years old and over without dental insurance cleanings, extractions and dental repairs while sharing the importance of dental hygiene with volunteers and patients alike.
“We want to raise awareness about the importance of dental health and the need for a place for these people to go. We really don’t have anything close by for people without insurance. The mouth is so important; it’s your gateway to good health. We saw this as a huge problem.”
– Cosby Potter-Davis, Director of Good Samaritan Free Clinic
According to Potter-Davis, this is the first time Good Samaritan FREE Clinic is hosting the event and expects to see over 600 people in need of care over the course of the 2 days.
Some dentists have already agreed to volunteer their services for the event, including dentists with Corner Stone Dentistry and civilians to help with registrations. However, with the expected public turnout, Potter-Davis said the clinic needs more dental professionals and donations to make it work.
“We have been able to make most of this happen through grants and donations including the WISH foundation, Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation, Valley Health, WVU Medicine, Healthy Smiles, P&G and Patterson Dental. We’ve been able to raise about $65,000, but we anticipated the cost of the overall clinic to be anywhere between $75,000 to $80,000 so we really need sponsorships and donations from local businesses and more dentists and hygienists willing to donate their skills and time to make this a huge success.”
The frustrations Potter-Davis said she and other local dentists felt when they were unable to refer noninsured patients anywhere for treatment led to the consideration and ultimate resurrection of the project.
“I have so many clients that need dental care, but I had nowhere to refer them to. We just thought about what we can do to help because I know local dentists are always feeling frustrated, as well, if a patient doesn’t have insurance, they don’t have anyone to refer them to. So we decided to look into a free clinic. I contacted the American Dentist Care Foundation and they agreed to bring all of the major equipment, including 45 chairs.”
The clinic will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 2, 2019 and Aug. 3, 2019 at Hedgesville High School, Hedgesville, West Virginia.
If you are 18 years and older and do not have dental insurance, you may participate. However, no children will be allowed to participate in the clinic.
