FREE tutoring to students in Big Rapids, Michigan offered by SLD Read [#BigRapidsMichigan #SLDRead #AllThingsFREE]

To promote literacy in children, SLD Read will be offering FREE tutoring to students at Brookside Elementary School, St. Peter’s Lutheran School and Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids, Michigan as part of their Language Links program.

The grant-funded program, which aims to help struggling kids improve their reading skills, will likely run from October 2019 to May 2020, but tutors will begin training in September 2019.

To qualify for tutoring services, kids must have free or reduced lunch, be at least 6 months behind in reading, writing or spelling and not be receiving special education services.

“My heart has always been with at-risk individuals. Being able to work with them and watch them grow is my favorite part of the process.”
– Suzanne Finney, curriculum instruction manager at SLD Read

“Everybody shows improvement. Most kids last year were able to show a six-month gain in a year of service, but our goal would be for kids to show a one-year gain in a year of service.”
– Lori Weller, education services manager at SLD Read

“The more tutors we have, the more we will be able to expand the program, which is our goal.”
– Suzanne Finney, curriculum instruction manager at SLD Read

Those wishing to become Language Links tutors should complete an interview with SLD Read, as well as be ready to complete a 32-hour training course called Phonetics Fundamentals.

According to Suzanne Finney, Ferris State University students studying education are encouraged to apply, as tutors receive internship credit, but anyone interested in an engaging volunteer opportunity can apply as well.

“What people don’t realize is these kids are so talented in other areas. If we can help encourage them to succeed, then the whole community benefits from their creativity.”
– Suzanne Finney

Anyone interested in becoming tutors can contact Suzanne Finney by email at sfinney AT SLDRead.org or by calling (231) 592-9605.
