Six Area Attractions Offer FREE Admission in May to Members

Members of Breast Cancer Foundation of Ozarks are slashing through red tape to ensure that both uninsured and underinsured women in this region have access to FREE breast cancer screenings.

According to said Kristi Seibert, foundation’s outreach director, the problem is not that there is no location for the FREE screening program, nor that there is no funding — it’s getting the information to those who need it most.

“How do you make (screenings) accessible to those who are very difficult to reach? The ladies who are not insured, it’s usually one of the last things they think about. It’s just not a reality for them — they are too busy.”
– Kristi Seibert

Freeman Health System will partner with the foundation to offer FREE screening mammograms to uninsured and underinsured individuals this week. Dubbed “Project Pink,” it will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2019 inside the Wes & Jan Houser Women’s Pavilion, 1532 W. 32nd St, Joplin, Missouri.

“We are thrilled to team up with Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks to offer these free screening mammograms. Women often take care of so many others; we want to give them the opportunity to take care of themselves.”
– Paula F. Baker, Freeman president and CEO

“We’re so fortunate that we’re able to work so well with both our medical centers here in Joplin. We’re truly blessed. In order for us to run one of these programs, they have to block their entire schedule off for a two-hour period, and that’s not easy for them to do. But they also have seen the need for this, and they are committed to do it.”
– Kristi Seibert

The process is user-friendly. Uninsured or underinsured women fill out an application and show a form of photo identification. No money, insurance forms or doctor’s orders are necessary. The foundation will pay the hospitals for the expense of each mammogram through the Medicare rate, roughly $100 per patient, from money raised during the annual Pink Ribbon Gala.

FREE mammogram screenings for the uninsured or underinsured will continue through the end of 2019, alternating each month between the two hospitals in Joplin. Mercy Hospital will host the May screening, which is slated from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019.
